DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to help prospective health care workers to understand that intrapersonal and interpersonal skills are part of their personal, professional and social development. It also seeks to give participants the opportunity to start to integrate such skills into this development.

Given that health care professionals need to develop therapeutic relationships with their clients and are also influential on clients’ health experiences, it is very important that health care professionals, such as nurses, are able to understand and develop intrapersonal and interpersonal skills.

With regards to intrapersonal skills, this study-unit intends to enable prospective health care workers to understand their personal needs, values, strengths, weakness, limitations, feelings and motivations. Through an opportunity of enhanced self-awareness, this study-unit is meant to help participants understand themselves and why they want to join the nursing profession.

With reference to interpersonal skills, this study-unit seeks to give students the opportunity to explore communication processes by which health care and therapeutic relationships can be more effective within a systematic context. Hence, through this study-unit, students have an opportunity to understand what happens within a professional ‘helping’ relationship and become aware of ‘helping’ skills, which will enable them to develop future caring professional relationships with patients and relatives. As effective health care delivery is multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary, this study-unit is also intended to help students understand the processes which are generally experienced by most groups and teams as well as to equip the participants with the basic skills that are necessary in order to facilitate daily interaction with colleagues. Through experiential and reflective practice, students develop skills that help them communicate effectively within a group of health care professionals.

Moreover, this study-unit will help to use skills that enable them to cope with different and at times, difficult situations and deal with the various emotions that may arise both intrapersonal and interpersonal in each of the different situation. In view of the sensitive nature of the study-unit where each student needs to go through a journey of personal development, it is necessary that the participants enrolled on this study-unit are grouped in 15 to 20 participants. Within this context, students can have the opportunity to learn the skills which this study-unit aims to give, rather than learn about them only.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to facilitate an exploration of, and an opportunity for learning intrapersonal and interpersonal processes that help the effective development of therapeutic relationships between health care professionals and their clients/patients. It also aims to explore communication processes by which nursing can be more effective within a systematic context.

In addition this study-unit aims to help students to gain experience about, and reflect upon, the processes that go along with the development and work of a group of professionals.
