DESCRIPTION This study-unit has been designed to help the student develop an overall knowledge and appreciation of concepts relating to the practice of maternal and child health.Students will explore maternal and child health problems and their underlying social, cultural and political causes. Students will also explore a range of primary health care approaches, including new interventions and strategies.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to develop an understanding of the principles of maternal and child health nursing and how these may be applied in practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop an awareness of the physical, psychological and social needs of mothers, babies and their families;
- Develop the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the care of mothers and their families;
- Apply theoretical perspectives of growth and development to the child and family;
- Discuss the effects of hospitalization on the child and family;
- Discuss the management of the child with selected medical/surgical conditions;
- Discuss the impact of chronic illness on the child and family; and
- Identify the overall goals of paediatric nursing.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate an understanding of the skills and attitudes which enable nurses to work effectively with mothers, children and their families;
- Articulate the significance of factors which may affect relationships between mothers, children, families and health care professionals; and
- Discuss and provide a rationale for strategies which nurses can utilise to develop skills in working with mothers, children and their families.
