DESCRIPTION The overall purpose of this study-unit is to introduce nursing students to the concept of evidence based practice and to help them understand the essence of becoming a professional evidence-based practitioner. It focuses on the first two steps of the process of evidence-based practice, namely converting clinical queries into answerable clinical questions, and searching the evidence to address such queries.

In the process, the study-unit provides students with the knowledge and skills required to conduct quality literature searching. Furthermore, it assists students in developing academic reading and writing skills, and exposes them to the health sciences literature.

Study-unit Aims:

The principal aims of this study-unit are to introduce students to:
- The conceptual knowledge related to searching for evidence in nursing;
- The practical skills required to conduct a search for the literature relevant to a specific clinical queries;
- A range of methods, systems and procedures through which knowledge and information is organized for storage and retrieval;
- The use of information technology in accessing information;
- Academic reading and writing skills;
- Evidence-based practice resources and the health science literature.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the meaning and importance of evidence-based practice;
- Understand a range of methods and procedures by which knowledge and information can be retrieved;
- Understand the process and methods characterising evidence-based practice;
- Understand the basic concepts behind academic reading and writing;
- Become acquainted with the principal components of a research article.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Formulate answerable clinical questions;
- Use several resources to identify, locate and access information;
- Develop academic reading and writing skills;
- Identify various types of research studies addressing significant clinical queries;
- Conduct an extensive search for research evidence in relation to relevant clinical queries;
- Maintain and present an audit trail about the process and outcome of a literature search.
