DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to nursing care provision across settings and along the age continuum, through a framework that embraces holistic person-centred care. It aims to develop the knowledge and related skills that would enable a comprehensive approach to nursing, building on an understanding of the ‘nursing process’ and an 'activities of daily living' approach. The teaching strategies utilised, will focus on helping students to develop their clinical decision-making skills to effectively address an individual’s diverse needs.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce the students to the application of the ‘nursing process’, 'activities of daily living' and other pertinent models of care in the nursing management of individuals;
- To help the student understand how the impact of illness on a person’s physical, psychological, socio-cultural and spiritual domains and the importance of considering these when developing a care plan through the utilisation of a holistic person-centred framework;
- To introduce students to the provision of nursing care across different settings, including acute, community, rehabilitation and long-term care. The nursing management of individuals along the age continuum from birth to end-of-life, will be discussed, with a special focus on the elderly adult person.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and describe the stages of the nursing process to assess and elicit the needs of individuals within a holistic person-centred framework, across settings and along the age continuum;
- Apply an 'activities of daily living' approach to assess and identify the needs of individuals using a holistic person-centred approach, across settings and along the age continuum;
- Describe the nursing management of patients suffering from illness including the immunosuppressed patient; the patient in pain; the patient with palliative needs and the patient from birth to end-of-life, through a formative assessment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess and identify the needs of individuals through appropriate models of care;
- Formulate a holistic and person-centred plan of care for individuals across settings and scenarios, and along the age continuum;
- Discuss principles behind safe, professional and ethical patient care.
