DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide information regarding the biological basis of various mental health and genetically related conditions including depression, schizophrenia, posttraumatic stress disorder, Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome, Cri-du-chat and various eating disorders. This information will then be related to interventions that can be provided in the various circumstances.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide information relating to the biological basis of various mental health illnesses and genetic conditions that impact on a person’s mental health. The study unit will also demonstrate how various psychological disorders result from a combination of both environmental and biological influences.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the biological and environmental basis behind mental health conditions including schizophrenia, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder
-Understand the difference between chromosomal and genetic mutations that have been identified as influencing behaviour
-Describe the role of biological and environmental triggers in eating disorders
-integrate information about biological structures and processes, human experience, and behaviour
-Understand various interventions that can be applied for biologically and environmentally induced conditions.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to apply the biological knowledge gained to real life situations encountered in their nursing practice
