DESCRIPTION The study-unit explores different aspects of the care of adults with mental health problems as well as providing an introduction to several other related, but not predicated, study-units within the 1st year (Introduction to Counselling Skills in Mental Health, Foundations in Mental Health Nursing (1) ).

Topics covered include:

- Managing acute care problems;
- Psychiatric conditions of the adult – psychosis and neurosis;
- Managing patient groups on mixed diagnosis units;
- Dealing with difficult situations – violence and aggression, absconding, psychiatric emergencies;
- Use of nursing process applied to the acute care setting;
- Integrated care pathways;
- Relationships and communication with acutely ill adults;
- Initial Psychopharmacology related to adult mentally ill patients;
- Use of therapeutic processes, counselling and psychodynamics;
- Use of group work;
- Occupation and involvement;
- Physical wellness;
- Recovery process;
- Patient inclusion;
- Use of evidence based materials.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide students with information detailing the various types of conditions and mental health problems associated with the acute mentally ill individual.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide the student with an overview of the issues relating to nursing in an acute adult care setting;
- Explore strengths and weaknesses in personal care skills;
- Identify the management issues related to acute care;
- Explore personal strategies for managing acute mental health problems.

2. Skills:
:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate care performance;
- Develop baseline skills in the care of an adult with a mental health problem.
