Study-Unit Description

CODE NUR1312

TITLE Foundations in Integrated Science for Mental Health Nurses

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Mental Health

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to introduce the basic principles of integrated science which underpin an understanding of the human body. Fundamental principles in relation to cell biology, transport mechanisms, endocrine system, nervous system and biochemistry will be investigated. These principles provide a basis for learning on other mental health study-units.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Explore the underlying scientific principles associated with the pathology of mental and physical health conditions;
- Provide students with a solid foundation in integrated science which is fundamental for students to undertake effectively study-units in Physical care in Mental health Nursing (NUR2314)) and Nervous System for Mental health care (NUR1303).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the structure and function of the main cell components;
- Explain the different types of transport mechanisms and relate them to the functioning of the neurone and activity in synaptic region (e.g., the Na+/K+ pump);
- Describe the ionic composition of the extracellular and intracellular environment;
- Define the terms pH, acid and base;
- Understand the components of blood and glucose regulation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the knowledge gained to understand the role of drugs used in the treatment of mental and physical diseases;
- Apply the knowledge gained to understand basic results from blood tests.
