Study-Unit Description

CODE NUR1505

TITLE Clinical Nursing Skills

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION In the course of this study-unit students will be expected to participate in the practice of clinical nursing skills following exposure to theory supporting practical skills. The theory of each clinical skill will be delivered to all the cohort in one group, and practical sessions in the simulation laboratories of the Department will follow. Such practical sessions will be organised for small groups of students (not more than 12), in order to better enable them to practice the nursing skills being taught. Each simulation teaching laboratory session will be delivered by a clinical skills instructor. Students will be supervised through the performance of skills in a simulated environment in the clinical skills laboratories.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Help students develop a sound body of theoretical knowledge underpinning a number of practice skills involved in nursing care delivery;
- Provide students with a correct demonstration of the performance of such skills using equipment that is used in Maltese healthcare facilities;
- Provide students with the opportunity to practice such skills safely in a simulated clinical environment using the same equipment that is used on the clinical area, in an attempt to enable the transfer of such skills to the real clinical environment; and
- Help students develop the ability to think critically during the performance of a skill/s.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the application of theory by practicing skills under supervision in a simulated environment;
- Describe to the practitioner/clinical tutor the theory supporting the respective skills; and
- Explain how and when it is necessary to document data arising from the outcome of a clinical skill performed.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(Under supervision of a clinical tutor)

- Apply principles of infection prevention and control and asepsis;
- Monitor and evaluate basic physiological measurements;
- Apply principles of drug administration though different modalities;
- Provide care of the patient with a naso-gastric tube and assist in feeding through NGT and PEG tube;
- Provide care of the patient with a urinary catheter and inserting a urinary catheter;
