TITLE Foundations for Health Promotion and Public Health

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to help students develop an understanding of Public Health as an approach to meeting health needs of populations through promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health related services. Maintaining the focus on 'health care' of communities and populations, it helps students appreciate the fact that their role as health carers extends beyond that which is given at the bedside.

The study-unit identifies Public Health methods which are used to address determinants of health, including social determinants. Since the major focus of Public Health is that of preventing disease and promoting positive health, the study-unit introduces Health Promotion principles and methods with reference to underlying theories upon which such methods are based.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is to help students understand the difference between clinical and public health approaches to care. It is also intended to help students understand how various approaches to Public Health address issues of equity and participation which they would have learnt about earlier on in their course of studies, and which are revised in this unit. Finally it is aimed to help students understand the specific approaches used in Public Health, such as epidemiology, screening occupational health and health promotion strategies.
