CODE NUR2086

TITLE Complex Clinical Situations

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce nursing students to the advanced skills required when dealing with complex clinical situations mainly related to sudden serious illness, acute deterioration and clinical crises situations. Situations related to sudden or acute deterioration in level of consciousness, respiratory and circulatory status, renal function and thermoregulation will be addressed. Lectures, online simulations and simulated lab scenarios will be utilised to enhance student learning.

Throughout the study-unit students will also be encouraged to adapt the knowledge and skills discussed to out-of-hospital settings, as well as to multiple patient situations. The study-unit includes a practical component in simulated learning environment (Labs).

Topics that will be covered include:
- Identifying and managing acute deterioration;
- Responding to sudden serious illness;
- Supporting airway, breathing and circulation;
- Maintaining body temperature;
- Addressing hypoxia, shock, oliguria and anaphylaxis;
- In-hospital resuscitation (incl. ALS algorithm, use of simple airway adjuncts, BVM ventilation); and
- Out-of-hospital and multiple patient considerations.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to enable students to identify and respond to sudden serious illness, acute deterioration and clinical crisis situations, and initiate appropriate life-sustaining measures under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Attain knowledge of skills required in complex clinical situations;
- Relate the management of complex clinical situations to anatomy, physiology and underlying pathophysiology; and
- Link theoretical knowledge to the performance of clinical skills.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to perform advanced nursing skills in complex clinical situations, under the supervision of a registered nurse.
