DESCRIPTION The study-unit has a two fold purpose, to consolidate existing or concurrnet material and devlop new ideas around self, self efficacy and clinical effectiveness.

The study-unit explores material from other study-units in the year and places them in relation to the following concepts and issues:

- Stress, Psycho-neuro-immunology, Placebos, Roles of the psychiatric nurse, Transference and counter-transference, Hildegarde Peplau (Interpersonal model) Social vs. therapeutic relationships, Self-disclosure, Defence mechanisms.
- Problem solving and decision making, Stigma and labelling in mental illness.
- Institutionalisation and deinstitutionalization, Goffman.
- Russel Barton. MH Reform in Malta, Policy Document (1995), The past, present and future Mental Health Acts in Malta and the modern world.
- Early intervention in psychosis.
- The engagement period (first encounter with services).
- Patient signature of another psychotic episode.
- Contracts, The effects of significant physical illness on the mind.

Study-unit Aims:

To enable the student to develop insights into the functions of the normal and the abnormal mind and the impact that this has on their ability to function as an independent person.

To consolidate the interrelated material from other study-units in the semester.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Examine the extent of the reciprocal influence of the mind and body;
- Identify the real and pseudo influences of the environment on the mind;
- Analyse the roles of the mental health nurses;
- Compare and contrast the components of a therapeutic and a social relationship.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically discus the gender, race and socio-economic influences on mental disorders;
- Consider the application of the various treatment modalities of care.
