DESCRIPTION This elective study unit aims at exploring the theoretical knowledge related to the musculoskeletal system and the role of the orthopaedic nurse. This includes a critical discussion on chronic musculoskeletal disorders, conditions and traumatic injuries. This study-unit is a theoretical base for the orthopaedic practical study units aiming for the delivery of safe, competent nursing practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study unit will familiarise students with knowledge and best practices related to orthopaedic nursing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system, through multiple choice questions during a final examination.
- Describe the structure and function of joint movement through multiple choice questions during a final examination.
- Through the use of case-scenarios, critically discuss the principles associated with the management of common orthopaedic injuries.
- Identify comprehensive nursing care plans for a patient undergoing elective interventions for orthopaedic conditions
- Discuss the assessment of a patient with musculoskeletal disorders, conditions and traumatic injuries through a written case-study.
- Discuss the assessment, prevention and management of complications related to musculoskeletal disorders, conditions and injuries, through a written case-study.
-Recognise the psychological and sociological effects of orthopaedic conditions through a written case-study.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to provide comprehensive education to patients within the orthopaedic setting, through the use of effective communication skills,
- Critically appraise a current evidence-based practice guideline in relation to orthopaedic nursing.
