DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of a series of interactive sessions and discussions which will highlight the importance of basing clinical nursing practice on findings from research studies. The sessions will also critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of adopting an evidence-based approach to health care. Barriers to the application of research findings to clinical practice and strategies to facilitate such an application will also be identified and discussed.

Study-unit Aims:

To equip nursing students with the skills necessary to apply evidence from research findings into clinical practice, both in their current role as student nurses and especially in their future role as qualified health professionals.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the barriers to the implementation of research findings into clinical practice;
- Identify ways of facilitating the application of research findings into practice.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Formulate clinical questions related to various aspects of nursing care,
- Critically evaluate the relevance of research findings to a clinical situation;
- Formulate strategies of applying such research findings into clinical practice.
