DESCRIPTION Nurses are duty bound to identify risks to patient safety and work within a team to promote an environment that is conducive to safe practice. This is tantamount in the operating theatre environment. Thus it is imperative that nurses are aware and increase their knowledge regarding their legal and professional obligations towards health and safety in the operating theatres. Issues that will be addressed in this unit include patient safety during the peri-operative phase, theatre preparation, infection control, management of a range of hazards (including biohazards, chemical and radiation hazards), cleaning disinfection and sterilization of instruments and equipment, maintenance of a sterile field.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study-unit is to extend participants' knowledge, understanding and ability and increase their awareness of the importance of delivering safe peri operative practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- discuss a wide range of safety issues that have a direct and indirect effect on quality patient care in the theatre setting
- identify and examine safe working practices in the peri-operative environment;
- evaluate the roles and responsibilities of the whole team working within the operating department to ensure safe patient care delivery.
- illustrate how safe nursing practice is applicable to, and transferable into peri-operative practice;

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- manage a range of hazards
- practice as an anaesthetic or scrub nurse in a safe manner
- reduce harm to patients in the operating theatre by identify sources of harm
- practice according to current infection control policies
- apply individual problem solving and critical thinking skills
- demonstrate personal organization in studying and completing the study unit;
- demonstrate an ability to think and write critically;
- demonstrate effective communication skills;
- practice in accordance with safety policies and guidelines.
