DESCRIPTION This is a practical study-unit linked to the theoretical study-unit NUR4305 Care of the Intellectually Disabled Person. It is designed to offer the student the opportunity to implement theoretical knowledge within their own clinical settings. All knowledge development in this unit is self directed and/or mentored by a clinical supervisor. Students are expected to develop their own learning contract with the unit coordinator and show implementation of both evidence based practice and theoretical materials developed during both the formal teaching and independent study sessions of NUR4305. Experiential development is gaged via a series of clinical competencies which include both core elements and those negotiated by the student at the outset of the study-unit.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to help students:
- Understand how theoretical knowledge is applied to clinical settings; and
- Reflect on their own performance in relation to their personal competencies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe common learning, intellectual and mental disability conditions whilst providing an overview of their main symptoms and clinical presentations;
- Discuss about various communication skills required to communicate effectively with the intellectually disabled person;
- Identify needs and rehabilitation strategies for intellectually disabled people and their families; and
- Converse about the importance of caring for intellectually disabled people in the community.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate effectively with intellectually disabled persons and their families in order to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care given;
- Engage in rehabilitation activities for the intellectually disabled person and his/her family; and
- Take part in activities promoting community care for intellectually disabled people.
