DESCRIPTION This study-unit is the final practice (clinically based) assessment for the programme. It takes place at the end of the students course of studies, in semester two. A period of preparation through independent study, group work and seminars precedes the examination. Students are assessed against a set of criteria and must manage the care of four patients with different levels of dependence throughout a given period of time within the clinical area. They are measured against safety and competence factors, professional skills and underlying knowledge, personal interchange with patients, response to untoward incidence, care management and evaluative activities, team working, teaching and work allocation criterion.

Study-unit Aims:

To asses the student's ability to function in clinical practice as a safe and competent practitioner at the level of a qualified mental health nurse.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate their knowledge of psychopharmacological care;
- Discuss the care management of individual patients;
- Evaluate their effectiveness within a care management environment;
- Relate the case studies of their chosen patients to the care they intend to offer as the optimum for this group.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Undertake case management activities for four patients safely and competently;
- Administer prescribed psychotrophic medications in the correct way;
- Describe the background to the four chosen patients;
- Undertake a teaching session with patients and/or junior staff members;
- Undertake administrative and management activities in relation to the care group;
- Respond to any untoward incidents in a professional and capable fashion;
- Write an informative handover report of the shift events;
- Evaluate their performance over the course of the shift.
