| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides students with an introduction to medical/surgical nursing by focusing on some of the common medical conditions which students encounter during their clinical placements. It also gives them an understanding of the general perioperative care of persons undergoing surgery. This study unit emphasises the impact of medical conditions and surgical procedures on the person's body image. It also allows them to apply what they have learnt in theory in practice. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to give students an introduction more specialised nursing care and allow the students to apply the knowledge in relation to care of patients with medical and surgical conditions to real case scenarios. 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of this study unit the student should: - show understanding of the common medical disorders and underlying pathophysiology; - show understanding of the medical management-investigations and treatment of these conditions; - show understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of the conditions requiring surgery; - show understanding of the nursing management of patients requiring surgical procedures and patients with medical conditions. Specifically students should show an understanding of the following topics: General Nursing - Altered body image Surgical Nursing - Nephrectomy - Gastrectomy - Whipple’s procedure Medical Nursing - Epilepsy - Meningitis - Parenteral nutrition - Care of chronic wounds - Pancreatitis - Adrenal Insuffiencies - Care of a patient with HIV/AIDS - Renal Calculi - Skin Disorders - Introduction to Rheumatology - ENT conditions - Eye Disorders 2. Skills: By the end of this study unit, students would be able to carry out care planning including assessment, goal setting, implementation and evaluation of care.
