DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the knowledge and understanding of a sound theoretical and empirical basis of promoting health behaviour to individuals. It equips them with the conceptual and practical skills necessary to design, implement, manage and evaluate one-to-one health promotion interventions in primary health care settings. Health promotion draws on ideas from sociology, psychology, anthropology, education, epidemiology and other disciplines to understand how the health of the individual living in the community can be maintained and strengthened. Thus this study unit also covers issues in health psychology aimed at enabling students apply related principles to this field of practice.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- introduce students to health psychology and health behaviour changes;
- discuss perceptions to health, illness and treatment;
- explore coping theories vis-a-vis health behaviour changes, illness and loss;
- discuss key concepts to socio-cognitive models and models of change;
- enable students to apply models of changes to health behaviour change;
- discuss the impact of stress on health behaviour change;
- discuss health of the individual across the lifespan.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- identify various individual perceptions to health, illness and treatment with particular focus on the the role of culture, gender and age;
- demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of health belief models;
- demonstrate knowledge of the key concepts of the various socio-cognitive models and how these reflect on individual health behaviour changes;
- discuss health-related changes that occur to the individual across the life-span;
- demonstrate knowledge about coping theories to health behaviour change.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- apply the principles of socio-cognitive models and health belief models to health behaviour change of the individual;
- integrate models and concepts of illness and disease prevention;
- consolidate theoretical concepts of health belief change to behaviour change techniques;
- carry out one-to-one health promotion sessions.
