DESCRIPTION The study-unit will focus on developing an understanding and awareness of:

The theoretical basis to and history of mental health nursing;
Political ideologies and their effects on the organization of health care, including funding and resource allocation;
The role of mental health nurses in contemporary mental health care and their relationship to other professions in mental health care;
Ways staff can improve clinical and personal communication between and among colleagues;
Current and emerging models of service delivery and issues of access and equity in health care, including adherence therapies and treatment compliance issues;
The effects of globalization on health and health care;
Ways of managing workload stress, harassment and burnout.

Study-unit Aims:

1. Describe the history of mental health nursing as a discipline and outline the major forces that have shaped the profession;
2. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the theoretical and evidence bases of mental health nursing practice;
3. Display a strong understanding of the mental health policy directions and issues at both national and international levels;
4. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the relationship of mental health nursing to the other professions in mental health care, including the additional role of non-government organizations in the provision of mental health care;
5. Discuss issues that are currently being debated in the sphere of mental health care;
6. Analyze and critique current and emerging models of service delivery.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- utilise advanced knowledge to practice as a specialist mental health nurse in various health settings;
- critically analyze and evaluate information and literature relevant to their profession e.g., government policy, research findings and also contribute to the attainment of the national goals for mental health;
- critically evaluate the role of the nurse in promoting mental health within various spheres e.g., hospital and community and also planning ways of improving on practice;
- describe relevant legislation and policy impacting upon the professional practice of mental health nursing;
- critically analyze ethical issues in nursing people with mental health disorders;
- critically evaluate issues in relation to the provision of mental health services.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate collaborative practice and interpret nursing science within an interdisciplinary context;
- practice nursing in diverse health care settings with an increased understanding of the nurses role in primary health care;
- engage and appreciate the need for lifelong learning activities that contribute to professional development on an individual level as well as to the advancement of mental health as a profession.
