| DESCRIPTION | The content for this study-unit has been broadly guided by the EONS Cancer Education Nursing Framework (2018) and the ONS Standards of Oncology Nursing Education: Generalist and Advanced nursing practice (2016). This study-unit will examine basic cancer biology, basic cancer genetics, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and current and evolving treatment modalities. A special emphasis will be placed on the major treatment modalities, with a focus on patient autonomy, safe administration, safe disposal and assessment and management of common side-effects/complications of cancer and cancer treatments. Psychosocial and spiritual dimensions of living with cancer will also be addressed, as will effective responses to the experiences and needs of individuals with a cancer diagnosis and their loved ones, throughout the cancer trajectory including the survivorship phase and the end of life. Lastly, instruction in professional attributes necessary for the successful uptake of diverse nurse specialist roles will be provided and these include advanced communication skills and leadership skills. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to: - Further develop the student's knowledge of the science and treatment of cancer and develop the associated nursing skills to educate and safely support the patient and his/her family during the various phases as necessary, namely, the preventative, diagnostic, treatment, survivorship and end-of- life phase; - Help the student develop the necessary skills to carry out a systematic and comprehensive assessment and to assess and manage common cancer and treatment-related symptoms; - Develop the student's knowledge and skills on effective communication with cancer patients and their families, and respond appropriately to their individual psychosocial and spiritual needs, within the various contexts. It also aims to develop personal coping strategies; - Develop the student's knowledge and skills to enable the deliverance of evidence based nursing care to individuals in the various stages of cancer, as well as care of the patient's loved ones and in consideration of the ethical, legal and political implications associated with cancer care provision; - Help students recognise the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to care; and - Develop leadership skills. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically describe and discuss the three stages of prevention, their associated approaches and underlying rationale for these, as well as the nurse's role within each one of these stages; - Critically describe and discuss the pathophysiology of cancer and the principles, application and safe administration of commonly used treatment modalities; - Identify the acute, chronic and late toxicities of cancer treatments and demonstrate a critical awareness of the evidence to reduce the risk of, and/or manage these side-effects and related complications; - Critically discuss the complex and changing informational, educational and supportive care needs of persons affected by cancer and their loved ones at the various stages of their illness; - Critically analyse the nurse's role in the well-being of individuals affected by cancer and their loved ones throughout the cancer trajectory, in consideration of the patients' individual characteristics and taking into account the associated ethical, legal and political implications; - Critically describe and evaluate current theories of communication in cancer care; - Critically discuss the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to care; - Demonstrate critical knowledge of leadership strategies; - Identify and evaluate personal stressors and describe potentially effective coping strategies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply relevant biological knowledge to nursing practice and cancer patient care situations; - Educate patients and their family in relation to healthy lifestyle choices and support health promotion strategies; - Provide information to facilitate patient treatment choices and use a range of nursing skills in the preparation of safe administration of the major treatment modalities; - Utilise the necessary skills to carry out a comprehensive nursing assessment, successfully identify the individual patient and family needs, develop and implement a patient-centred care plan and evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions; - Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with patients and relatives using non-medical terminology; - Demonstrate the ability to support and facilitate patients’ decision making and their empowerment; - Effectively communicate with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and serve as a focal point of care; and - Demonstrate skills to independently use effectively on-line and blended approaches of learning to achieve learning objectives.
