DESCRIPTION This study unit will review the pathology and management of malignant lesions affecting the reproductive tract.

Study-unit Aims

Gynaecological tumours will be reviewed in relation to their epidemiology and aetiology. The principles of carcinogenesis, tumour immunology and pathology, together with diagnostic techniques and staging of gynaecological tumours will be discussed. The study unit will also outline the basic principles of treatment, surgical, chaemotherapeutic or radiotherapy, together with knowledge of terminal care from gynaecological malignancy.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the principiles of vulval and vaginal dysplasia and neoplasia and the management of the various condtions.
- Outline the diagnosis and management of cervical carcinomas.
- Describe the diagnosis and management of uterine corpus and fallopian tube malignancies.
- Outline the pathology and management of breast malignancy.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Detail the principles of exfolliative cytology and its role in the management of cervical dyplasias and carcinoma.
- Describe the diagnosis and management of uterine corpus and fallopian tube malignancies.
- Detail the pathological principles behind ovarian malignancies, the diagnostic tools useful in their differentiation, staging techniques and management.
