DESCRIPTION The block placement shall consist of a month of uninterrupted supervised clinical practice placement at an occupational therapy service setting. It will provide students with an opportunity to test their emerging therapeutic skills and knowledge so far gained.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study-unit is to provide occupational therapy students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge learnt in the classroom to practice in the clinical setting.

During this placement, students can also explore their ideas for their research proposal, and discuss them with occupational therapists (if appropriate).

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Test their therapeutic skills and knowledge so far gained, and to develop their understanding of the application of the Occupational Therapy process in the various practice contexts;

Assume the full occupational therapy assistant role, i.e. hands-on-participation under direct supervision.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Demonstrate effective observation skills both with clients, carers and the various treatment situations and participate effectively if asked to do so;

Demonstrate understanding of theoretical concepts underpinning occupational therapy;

Participate in the use of therapeutic activities as appropriate;

Observe and participate in administrative functions and operations of the OT department;

Establish effective verbal and non-verbal communication, feedback and reporting skills both with clients, carers, co-workers and fieldwork educators;

Demonstrate initiative, appropriate judgement and follow through with all expected duties;

Demonstrate professional behavior required of an OT including responsibility to the client, confidentiality and respect;

Demonstrate an ability to establish and maintain effective and appropriate relationships with client, carers and the multidisciplinary team;

Demonstrate elements of self-directed learning;

Demonstrate elements of critical thinking, making links between theory and practice;

Demonstrate effective time management skills;

Demonstrate the application of safety standards and procedures during practice and knowledge to deal with unexpected situation.
