DESCRIPTION This study-unit highlights the significance of a knowledge base in the occupational therapy profession and how this is organised into specific concepts which guide and rationalise clinical endeavour. The issue of professional terminology is discussed including AOTA Uniform Terminology III and OTPF Second edition. A number of models of practice and frames of reference will be discussed and later applied to specific clinical cases.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to enable students to:
- Develop analytic abilities;
- Develop ability to synthesize and integrate information and ideas;
- Learn concepts and theories underpinning Occupational Therapy practice and intervention.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Acquire a working knowledge of occupational therapy terminology;
- Describe the significance of the theoretical knowledge underpinning Occupational Therapy;
- Differentiate between models, frames of reference and theories;
- Demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical concepts to frame specific clinical cases;
- Synthesise theoretical rationales underpinning intervention.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe specific aspects of the domain of concern of occupational therapy by applying the correct terminology;
- Use specific frames of reference to understand clinical problems, suggest intervention strategies and rationales underpinning intervention;
- Delineate between different frames of reference, models of practice and in which scenario these can be applied;
- Critically appraise various postulations made by different authors to organise theory in occupational therapy.
