TITLE Advanced Psychosocial Clinical Skills

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Occupational Therapy

DESCRIPTION The first part of the study-unit covers, skills, techniques and treatment methods common to psychosocial practice settings in occupational therapy. These include Anxiety and Stress Management, Relaxation, Social Skills Training, Cognitive Behaviour Techniques and Creative Therapies.

The second part of this unit builds on the first part and is intended to help the student review a range of theories and techniques used by occupational therapists in the field of mental health. It explores characteristics of purposeful activities and how these are inhibited by mental health or help to promote it. Individual and group therapies are explored and measured to determine intervention outcomes.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are:
- To appreciate and review the wide range of OT treatment techniques available for use in mental health intervention to promote positive mental health.
- To explore the various therapeutic solutions for specific scenarios using the most suitable techniques.
- Planning of practical sessions and carrying out specific techniques in the protected environment of the classroom and exploring outcomes.
- Help the student select and apply the appropriate therapeutic media for both individuals and for groups.
- To help the student practise some of the basic skills required for implementing occupational therapy in the psychosocial field.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Review the range of theories and techniques used by occupational therapists working in mental health settings.
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge regarding different techniques most commonly used in psychosocial occupational therapy and relate them to the underlying frames of reference.
- Demonstrate how activities can be used to promote positive mental health.
- Articulate how the outcomes of occupational therapy group and individual interventions can be measured.
- Draw up intervention plans for realistic and relevant case scenarios.
- Articulate and justify different perspectives and different solutions to problems presented in case scenarios.
- Carry out literature searches on techniques learnt and examine the evidence on the effectiveness of different interventions/techniques, the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each technique and precautions that need to be taken when using particular techniques.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Relate theory to practical situations using the correct technique depending on the client's diagnosis or presenting signs.
- Analyze complex real-life scenarios and participate in a variety of therapeutic activity sessions.
- Formulate a hypothetical intervention plan which will describe the selected occupational therapy approaches and types of interventions for reaching identified outcomes for clients coming from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Practise basic techniques and skills in class and be able to modify techniques learnt to fit specific situations and different client groups - i.e. plan, set therapeutic goals and carry out sessions with minimal supervision.
- Select techniques that are appropriate for use with an individual as opposed to a group of individuals whilst measuring outcomes using a recommended format.
- Identify the materials necessary to carry out specific sessions - i.e. assessment of the appropriate physical environment where the session is to be held and being creative in the selection of materials and themes for these sessions.
- Identify gaps in their skills.
