TITLE Performance Skills and Client Factors in Neurorehabilitation

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Occupational Therapy

DESCRIPTION This Course is an introduction to OT treatment methods with regards to the various performance components underlying physical dysfunction. It will go into further detail regarding the theoretical bases for therapeutic techniques and modalities used, mainly those based on the Neurodevelopmental Approach to the treatment of physical disability. It will also challenge the students to start their critical appraisal of all the approaches and techniques currently available in the field of occupational therapy with physical dysfunction.

Objectives

The aim of this course is to :

- Provide basic knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning the treatment methods for performance components in the field of physical dysfunction.
- Outline the various treatment/therapeutic methods used in OT in relation to each component, namely through the use of the Neurodevelopmental Approaches.
- Help the students build and apply their clinical reasoning skills with regards to the various techniques/modalities in this field.
- Help the students develop a critical appraisal of the various remediation modalities available and be able to describe the "what, where, when and how" of each one.
- Reinforce the concept of person-centred care with regards to each therapeutic procedure discussed.
- Discuss and analyse the effectiveness of therapeutic methods used by OTs in this field.
- Provide practical examples and discussion with relation to the students' hospital placements.
- Increase the students' awareness of the importance of the use of an interdisciplinary approach to treatment with regards to each performance component.
- Increase the students' awareness of the need for further research with regards to the effectiveness of the treatment modalities used and the importance of its publication for ensuring a higher quality evidence-based OT practise.
