DESCRIPTION The study-unit is a comprehensive review of fractures and orthopaedic conditions which are referred for rehabilitation to occupational therapy clinics. The unit considers in detail clinical manifestations and treatment options including surgery.

The following topics will be covered:

FRACTURES
Pathology of fractures and fracture healing; clinical and radiological features;principles of treatment; complications; joint Injuries; fractures of cervical spine, spine and thorax, shoulder, upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, pelvis, thigh, knee, leg, ankle and foot; paraplegia from spinal injury.

ORTHOPAEDICS
General Survey of orthopaedic disorders; Injuries; Deformities;Affection of joints, bone and soft tissues;Neurological disorders; Neck and Cervical spine (deformities, infections, arthritis, mechanical derangement, tumours);The shoulder region (arthritis, mechanical derangements, frozen shoulder, disorders of specific forms);The upper arm and elbow (deformities, arthritis, mechanical derangements, extra-articular disorders);The forearm, wrist and hand (articular and extra - articular disorders);The hip region (shortening, posture, gait, extra-articular disorders);The thigh and knee;The leg, ankle and foot

Study-unit Aims

The unit aims to give the student a concise but comprehensive account of causes of fractures, their care and rehabilitation, as well as an overview of orthopaedic conditions. This knowledge will serve as an important pre-requisite for occupational therapy theory and practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Illustrate the causes, mechanisms,clinical manifestations, treatment options (including surgery) of fractures
- Illustrate the characteristics of common orthopaedic conditions met in acute and rehabilitation settings

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the characteristics of fractures, causes, their care and rehabilitation
- Describe precautionary measures involved in the handling and rehabilitation of fractures
- Describe signs and symptoms of different orthopaedic conditions
- Identify treatment options for different orthopaedic conditions
- Identify expected prognostic features of orthopaedic conditions
- Carry out a basic assessment of clients in this domain
