DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds on the principles of preventive dentistry taught in ORC1105. It gives an overview of oral health epidemiology of different populations, focuses on the prevention of oral diseases through understanding their determinants, and gives an overview of public health policy and its implementation in health care systems. The link between oral health and substance abuse is also discussed.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to:

- Provide knowledge on how diverse and alternative health care systems function.
- Provide an overview of public health policy and its implementation in health care systems.
- Familiarise the student with oral health epidemiology of different populations.
- Highlight how to apply to practice the principles of prevention and oral health promotion.
- Integrate the knowledge in preventive dentistry acquired in other study-units in the course.
- Provide basic knowledge in the assessment of different preventive and health promotion approaches appropriate for the prevention of oral diseases.
- Highlight the importance of substance abuse in relation to oral health and general health.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe commonly occurring diseases of the mouth and their relevant prevention and treatment.
- Describe in appropriate detail the health risks of substance abuse, including tobacco and alcohol, on oral health and general health.
- Describe the role of General Preventive Strategies, including the use of Fluorides and Public Health Education, in the reduction of disease and inequalities.
- Describe the planning of oral health care for patients to meet needs and demands.
- Discuss appropriate evidence-based oral health maintenance techniques for all dental diseases.
- Describe how diet may affect oral health, including non-carious tooth surface loss.
- Describe the methods/aids that can be used in maintaining oral hygiene.
- Name and describe the action of pharmaceutical agents used in preventive dentistry.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Relate basic evidence-based preventive education and guidance to patients/parents/carers in order to encourage self-care and motivation.
- Explain to patients and carers appropriate evidence-based oral health maintenance techniques for all dental diseases.
- Demonstrate oral hygiene techniques including toothbrushing, the use of interdental aids, mouthwash rinses, disclosing agents, care and maintenance of prostheses and orthodontic appliances.
- Design a strategy to tackle a major oral heath problem.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
