DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to teach the fundamentals of developing and running a successful dental practice. Areas covered include the broader issues of dental practice, Medical Council and local legislation, including patients' rights and confidentiality, data protection, service quality delivery, occupational hazards and the maintenance of a safe working environment. It consists of formal lectures and tutorials. In addition research methodology and critical appraisal of literature is taught in detail.

Principles of Health Economics, running a practice as well as coping with stress in dentistry and building resilience are also among the topics being tackled and covered in this study-unit.

Independent study time is also factored in. Students will be expected to complete a research project as a compulsory part of this study-unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

- This one year study-unit builds on the knowledge acquired in the previous years. The emphasis of this study-unit is to encourage students to apply the principles of dental public health;
- This study-unit aims to give the student a wide range of skills, including research, investigative, analytical, problem solving, planning, communication and team skills;
- The student will be taught the skills to critically appraise scientific literature, to carry out a research project and to write a scientific paper.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the range of information needed when planning dental services;
- Describe how to critically appraise literature;
- Learn about occupational hazards;
- Discuss the principles of professionalism in the dental practice;
- Discuss the principles of clinical governance in the dental practice;
- Discuss data protection, ethics and patients' rights;
- Discuss service quality;
- Describe the concept of oral health-related quality of life;
- Discuss the principles behind health economics;
- Discuss coping with stress in dentistry.
- Discuss ergonomic principles.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide evidence-based treatment.
- Carry out basic dental research, using the experience in research methodology and computer skills;
- Make a critical appraisal of literature;
- Evaluate published clinical and basic science research;
- Implement an evidence-based approach to dental practice;
- Work ergonomically at the dental teaching cleaning;
- Apply the principles of coping with stress and building resilience;
- Work effectively with other members of the dental team;
- Write a scientific paper about a study as the final assignment of the year.

Please note that a pass in the Examination and Assignment components is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
