DESCRIPTION This study-unit is available during the year and summer period and attendance is compulsory.

The student will be exposed to novel dental laboratory techniques and sessions in the various fields of prosthetic Dentistry, within the University Dental laboratory or alternative sites as deemed necessary by the Faculty.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit is to expose students from a dental technology background to novel techniques of prosthetic reconstructions and dental laboratory practice associated with geriatric dentistry.
It will consolidate the technical training in Prosthodontics as well as introduce the student to novel techniques available in the discipline.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the principles of Prosthodontics for the older adult;
- Discuss prosthetic considerations for the functionally independent, frail and functionally dependent older adults;
- Discuss the impact of prosthetic intervention on oral health in the older adult;
- Discuss alternative and novel prosthetic techniques utilized in the management of older adults.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the principles of Prosthodontics for the older adult;
- Perform the laboratory steps in the fabrication of removable prostheses;
- Handle dental materials used in the dental laboratory.
