Study-Unit Description

CODE PAT5400

TITLE Fundamentals of Laboratory Science

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Pathology

DESCRIPTION The principles of Molecular and Cellular Biology are taught giving knowledge of the current translation to clinical practice. General Laboratory techniques are covered and the use of clinical information, biobanking and research will be addressed. Qualitative and quantitative experimental designs are explained, with focus on the scientific method. An overview of current departmental projects (Faculty of Medicine & Surgery) shall be presented and discussed.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide knowledge of cellular and molecular biology and the application of various laboratory techniques to support clinical research.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- discuss in detail the use of current facilities in medical research to support improvements and novel findings;
- provide critical reviews of laboratory techniques used in today’s and future molecular medicine applications;
- describe cellular organization; and function 4. provide detailed appraisal of molecular mechanisms and technology used to derive datasets in high impact publications.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- undertake research and translate new findings to the clinic;
- explain the principles of molecular biology;
- apply the principles of molecular biology to clinical needs;
- use technology in the laboratories safely;
- discuss the need to take biological samples;
- explain the importance of biological samples for research.
