DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide the student a comprehensive understanding of the basic science, principles and practice of transfusion medicine. The teaching programme will include:
• Blood Physiology
• Red cell, platelet and leucocyte serology
• Principles of coagulation and immunology
• The HLA system
• Plasma protein fractionation & recombinant products
• Clinical Transfusion Medicine:
• Paediatric practice
• Optimal use of blood products
• Haemorrhage
• Therapeutic apheresis
• Bone marrow transplantation
• Haemovigilance and traceability

Learning Objectives

1. Achievement of a core knowledge of blood cell physiology and red cell, platelet and leucocyte serology.
2. An understanding of the principles of coagulation, immunology and plasma protein fractionation.
3. A detailed knowledge of the application of the principles of blood transfusion to clinical practice.
4. An understanding of the practical issues and problems encountered in the clinical use of blood components.
5. An appreciation of the role of blood component therapy in the overall management of patients.
6. An understanding of the practice of transfusion medicine in paediatric patients and in patients requiring bone marrow transplantation.
7. An appreciation of the role of therapeutic apheresis in the management of patients with neurological and haematological conditions.
