Study-Unit Description

CODE PAT5827

TITLE Molecular Techniques

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Pathology

DESCRIPTION Ongoing projects in molecular pathology will be used as a basis of understanding the various molecular techniques and the proper utilization of the technology to achieve the results required.

The tools of molecular biology are taught within the context of their application. PCR methodology is discussed together with its use for detection of polymorphisms. In the genomics section, topics include linkage and association studies and microarrays.

The student shall be assigned to perform one experiment and present the results during the presentation. The presentation is intended to transfer knowledge to the other candidates and discuss the issues of selecting the technique to achieve the objective of the experiment. The experiment is conducted with a trained technical person.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the study-unit the student should be aware of the need of proper research and diagnostic work plan to achieve results and be at the forefront of the field of interest.

The candidate is expected to have gained a sound knowledge of molecular techniques that allows the use of resources and appropriate methods to achieve the required results. The analysis of results, presentation of results, and use of proper methodology is a requisite for successful research.

Reading List

Journals, e.g. Nature Methods; Biotechniques; BioMed Central.
Various Internet Resources are available for pathology: List will be given at the start of the study unit.
