| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will consider the position of human rights within the European Union and the development over the years in the importance of human rights within the European Union. The unit will address not only the Treaties, Directives and the Charter of Fundamental Rights but will also consider and analyse the different agencies set up by the European Union in the field of human rights and the work carried out by such agencies. On the other hand, the role of a number of Lobby Groups that have been set up and which participate within the procedures of the EU institutions will also be considered. In this manner the topics that will be addressed will be include, among others, the Human Rights Agency, European Institute for Gender Equality, the Advisory Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men. The role of the EU in advancing the protection of human rights with third countries will also be considered. Learning Objectives: The unit will enable students to analyse the role of the EU in the implementation of Human Rights and the mediums used by the EU institutions. Students will also obtain an understanding of the work of a number of agencies of the EU and also organisations that lobby for the advancement of human rights at EU level.
