DESCRIPTION The unit will study the different international and regional systems of protection of human rights by analysing the role of inter-governmental structures such as that of the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Union. The unit will also study a variety of international or regional conventions and charters that States have ratified to analyse the protection given therein and the structures of implementation and enforcement.

Study-Unit Aims:

To analyse the different international and regional systems of protection of human rights, consider their effectiveness or lack thereof, current debates on proposed amendments to these systems, their effect at national and international level, and how they interact with one another.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse the protection of human rights on the international and regional level;
- Identify Malta's role in these systems;
- Consider how these systems shape the recognition and application of human rights at international, regional and national level.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide a written analysis of the international treaties and conventions which shape human rights development in different regions and internationally.
