DESCRIPTION The study-unit will focus on an analysis of human rights related to communication of thought, opinion and belief. This will include a study of the four communication feeedoms, that is, freedom of thought, freedom of religion, freedom of expression and freedom of association. The Unit will also consider restrictions to the exercise of these freedoms and how they relate to the exercise of other rights.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of the study-unit is to identify and analyse how different issues related the four communication freedoms are protected through different human rights.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Iidentify issues related to communication and expression which are protected under human rights law;
- Analyse the concepts and principles developed by the European Court of Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Committee and national courts in the relevant caselaw;
- Analyse and consider how national legislation implements the protection of these freedoms.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Undertake written analysis of how communication freedoms find protection under Human Rights Law.
