DESCRIPTION This unit exposes students to coaching and teaching experiences related to the basic skills of Gymnastics, Swimming, Athletics and Mini Games. The practical component focuses on the reflective practitioner and the applicability of sport pedagogies. Through hands on practice and reflection on practice, students experience coaching practices fit to suit the needs of the very young participants.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at:
- Engaging students in a myriad of teaching/coaching experiences related to areas of coaching the very young participants (5 - 7 years);
- Providing students with the tools to apply coaching theories in practices;
- Exposing students to coaching young participants;
- Inducing a reflective approach to coaching young participants;
- Providing tangible coaching experiences which highlight the essential qualities necessary to teach/coach young participants.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Design and apply appropriate frameworks for teaching and coaching young participants through mentored and assessed planning of coaching sessions;
- Differentiate between coaching younger and older participants through comparative observation experiences;
- Structure and plan coaching sessions framed within LTAD principles and frameworks through session planning activities and discussion;
- Apply in practice coaching theory and reflect on it through coaching practice.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Reflect and adapt games to meet the diverse needs of young participants through planning and practice;
- Plan and deliver engaging sessions with young participants in a sport of his/her choice;
- Critically reflect on pedagogical approaches used in coaching during field work;
- Reflect in-action and post-action during coaching practices through evaluations.
