DESCRIPTION The study-unit focuses on a number of pedagogical issues related to sport coaching. The themes tackled throughout the study unit relate to theories and practice of principles in goal setting and planning practice sessions. The various coaching philosophies, objectives and styles are analysed as well as effective assessment and communication protocols. The study-unit also delves into positive behaviour management, and safe practice in coaching. Important aspects of skills teaching are covered including stages of learning, methods of teaching simple and complex skills and feedback. The study-unit presents a holistic understanding and practice of three dimensionality coaching which merges within its practice, the body, mind and heart.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at:
- Generating an awareness on the quality of practice and coaching;
- Generating an awareness of setting an adequate environment for effective coaching;
- Reflecting on pedagogical issues within planning coaching programmes and within coaching practice;
- Providing the tools required to perform pedagogically sound coaching sessions;
- Improving coaching practice;
- Contrasting and differentiating between the different levels of coaching across the different levels of athletic and child development;
- Reflecting on the holistic potential of three dimensionality coaching.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Design appropriate challenging coaching sessions;
- Reflect on pedagogical qualities of a coach;
- Reflect on the philosophy of coaching;
- Maximise time and space in ways which optimize coaching programmes;
- Reflect on ways how the immediate environment within which coaching takes place impacts the coaching process and coaching effectiveness;
- Discuss the various stages of learning;
- Differentiate between methods of teaching and simple and complex skills;
- Reflect on the importance of feedback for skill learning;
- Maximise coaching potential by bringing in the psychological and emotional aspects of coaching.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use the right tools for planning, delivering and evaluating good coaching practice;
- Communicate well with athletes, parents, administrators and managers;
- Learn how the link between athletes, coaches and parents impacts progressive athletic development;
- Apply theoretical aspects related to sport science;
- Develop sound coaching programmes framed by scientific facts;
- Create an effective learning environment and manage behaviour in coaching sessions;
- Give feedback in different phases of skill learning.
