DESCRIPTION This study-unit will explore the basic anatomy and biomechanics of systems related to exercise and sport. The student will be provided with the tools to understand the anatomical concepts in relation to physical activity and how these can be utilised and observed in biomechanical terms.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at teaching functional human anatomy in relation to sports and exercise with a gradual introduction of basic concepts of biomechanics and movement. This will help the student appreciate external forces and their effects, how the body itself generates forces in relation to different sporting activities and how these can be ameliorated to create more effective movement.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the skeletal system together with its functions and classification;
- Appreciate the types of movements at joints and their structure;
- Demonstrate knowledge about the major muscle groups, their action and location;
- Explain the function of cartilage, tendons and ligaments;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of movement and levers in relation to biomechanics, with a special reference to sporting actions;
- Analyse the growth and development of children and implications for the sport coach.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the development of bone;
- Classify the types of bones according to their shape, development and location;
- Identify the major bones of the axial and appendicular skeleton;
- Identify anatomical landmarks of axial and appendicular skeletal components;
- Classify and describe joints based upon the degree of movement;
- Compare, describe and illustrate common joint structures;
- Identify the components observed in key joint structures including the spine, ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and wrist;
- Describe the various movements at the joints;
- Describe how muscles and skeletal elements work together to create movement by applying the principles of simple machines such as the lever, wheel and pulley;
- Describe patterns of muscle fibre arrangement and how this pattern affects movement;
- Identify and locate the origin, insertion and action of the major muscles;
- Define the role of prime mover, agonist, antagonist, synergist and fixator muscles;
- Use the correct terminology relative to the muscular system terms associated with the skeletal system;
- Describe the anatomical position;
- Identify and describe planes and sections as they relate to gross anatomy;
- Demonstrate knowledge and disciplinary concepts related to the field of biomechanics with a special reference to sporting actions such as kicking a ball, and injury prevention;
- Demonstrate knowledge related to physical development of children and their development of movement.
