TITLE Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Healthy Lifestyles

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Institute for Physical Education and Sport

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will examine the role of physical activity in public health and introduce the complex relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, fitness and health. It will provide an introduction to basic epidemiology, pscyho-social influences, measurement and chronic disease prevention.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide students with a conceptualisation of physical activity, sedentary behaviour and fitness. It will equip them with knowledge and understanding of individual, social and environmental factors influencing physical activity and sport. The benefits of physical activity for physical and mental health, social connectedness and general well-being and the contribution of physical activity towards keeping a health weight and in preventing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer, will also be discussed, focusing on the large scales epidemiological studies that highlight prevention. This unit will also discuss physical activity and sedentary time levels in various populations and age-groups, including local published statistics, the recommendations for these behaviours and their evolvement.

Accurate measurement of physical activity behaviour is important to identify causal association with health and to quantify the size of the association, while monitoring patterns over time. The second part of this unit will introduce the measurement of physical activity and sedentary time, and body composition, (with a particular emphasis on anthropometry) and the use of self-report and objective measures will be discussed. Fitness and activity tests and batteries will also be reviewed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of physical activity, HEPA (health-enhancing physical activity) Eesedentary behaviour, physical fitness, exercise and health;
- Comprehend the recommendations for physical activity and sedentary behaviour and how they can be met;
- Examine the relationship between health physical activity and inactivity;
- Recognise the relationship between physical activity and weight status;
- Examine attitudes towards physical activity participation and competition;
- Study the influences of various stakeholders towards physical activity participation;
- Comprehend psycho-social factors related to participation;
- Comprehend the economic implications of inactivity;
- Comprehend the process of exercise adherence across the life-span;
- Critically evaluate assessment methods for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and body composition;
- Review the physical fitness and activity batteries available.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Measure physical activity and sedentary behaviour using various objective and non-objective tools;
- Assess body composition, with a particular focus on anthropometry;
- Measure physical activity using self-report and objective tools;
- Use a fitness battery to motivate participants to be active and meet specific targets;
- Investigate the dynamics of group behaviour in relation to participation in physical activity and sport.
