TITLE Introduction to Sociology of Sport and Contemporary Issues

DESCRIPTION The study-unit is mainly compiled of theoretical lectures which bring together a number of themes within this field. The study-unit starts off at deciphering sociology and progressively applying this to the world of sport. Lectures consist of discussing and reflecting on sociological concepts which are presented in ways which allow students to understand and appreciate the progressive development of sport, and the ways this same progressive development impacts human behaviour. The themes and concepts covered relate to the functions, relationships and impact of sport on human nature and the world. A number of themes emergent from applied sociology related to sport experiences such as deviance and violence, religion, media and gender are discussed and used as media to help generate an appreciation of lived and applied sociology.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- Provide different outlooks and perspectives on the function of sport;
- Provide a progressive developmental structure of how sport evolved and changed depending on societal needs and human interests;
- Generate an increased appreciation to sociology and a better understanding of human behavior in applied sports settings; generate discourse and discussion on applied sports themes and reflect at a higher order capacity on lived sports experiences.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Comprehend the necessary functions of sport as these develop and change through the ages;
- Appreciate the various functions of sport and the power this lifestyle has on people and those who study it;
- Appreciate sport as a way of life;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the factors influencing sport.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate comprehension of sport within society and the function this has in our everyday life;
- Relate to developmental stages within society and understand the functions sport have gradually developed within;
- Discuss social behaviours in various sports settings in light of sports development and social changes;
- Apply and comprehend coaching principles and methods which relate to discussed sociological aspects;
- Relate coaching practices and coaching philosophies to sociological aspects of sport;
- Match lived experiences to social phenomena.
