DESCRIPTION The study-unit is composed of a number of theory based lectures and practical sessions. Throughout the theoretical lectures, the technical and tactical components of a number of track and field events are analysed and broken down into progressive elements for teaching and learning. Officiating athletic events will also be included. These components are carried out by means of individual and group work in the practical sessions. The cognitive elements within the teaching of track and field events are given major importance so as to help students understand the importance of focusing on the concepts within the cognitive domain rather than the simple physical abilities . The sprinting and endurance events, team relay and hurdling as well as jumps and throws in athletics are all tackled in depth. Students will be challenged in developing analytical skill abilities, and finally an appreciation of the athlete at work. A holistic pedagogical approach helps students understand the progressions in the teaching of the track and field events under study.
