DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the development of sports policy, community sports development, elite sports and mega-events such as the Olympic Games. This is an emerging field with a particular contribution to the field of sport. Sport development is being advocated as the way forward to debate better the field of sport and physical education so that policy makers, organisations, service providers, practitioners and participants can be engaged more proactively. This study-unit will show how sport development describes policies, processes and practices aimed at providing sporting opportunities and encouraging positive sporting experiences.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit will introduce students to the development of sports policy and the ideologies involved in the process. It presents different ways sports policy is used to address inequality and presents different models of community sports development. Resources required for developing sports, including volunteering and the professionalization of sports development are also discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Characterise and discuss the policy processes;
- Describe the terms related to community sports development;
- Demonstrate community sports development practice;
- Identify and illustrate the development of sports for all initiatives;
- Compare situations which may arise within the realms of group work;
- Analyse different ideas, philosophies of interaction and socialisation;
- Describe the theory of the community sport development provision;
- Describe models of community sports development;
- Identify and relate to elite sports development;
- Describe and illustrate the politics and policy of hosting sporting events.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop sports in the community;
- Identify community needs in relation to sport and physical activity;
- Liaise with various stakeholders and entities within the community;
- Provide opportunities for participation in sport for all sections of the community;
- Evaluate and monitor activities and projects using performance indicators.
