TITLE Promoting Physical Activity and Behaviour Change

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Institute for Physical Education and Sport

DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds on the introductory study-unit which covers the basic concepts of physical activity and well-being. This study-unit will discuss various models and frameworks for behaviour change with a particular focus on the socio-ecological framework. Physical activity promotion and interventions for different target groups will be reviewed.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to build on the knowledge obtained in the introductory unit on physical activity and discuss the promotion of physical activity. Theoretical models of activity promotion and behaviour change are introduced and the motivation behind this change is discussed using each model. Theories and models include the Theory of Planned behaviour, Weiner's attribution model, Goal Orientation theory, Competence motivation theory, Self-Determination Theory, Social Cognitive theory, Self-efficacy, Socio-ecological theory, amongst others.

The second part of the study-unit will seek to discuss the application of these models to inform policy and to design interventions and campaigns in different settings including the community and the workplace, and the need for such interventions that target the socially disadvantaged. Various physical activity policies will also be reviewed. Practical examples of interventions will be discussed and reviewed, with a particular emphasis on WHO's publications in the reference list, and other interventions in USA and Australia. Additionally, this study-unit will also discuss how intervention programmes are designed and evaluated using a framework and how to collect and interpret data. Students will be guided to plan an intervention programme for a target group of their choice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the contribution of the theories and models of behavioural change to interventions and policy;
- Identify key concepts and implications in promoting physical activity involvement from an ecological approach;
- Identify ethical issues in promoting community physical activity involvement, including the need to develop partnerships with communities and organisations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply models of behaviour change to promote physical activity and increase participation;
- Apply research results in the design of physical activity interventions;
- Plan and design interventions to increase activity;
- Evaluate interventions aimed at increasing physical activity and reduce sedentary lifestyles.
