DESCRIPTION Together with Socrates and Aristotle, Plato (c.427-347 B.C.) is universally recognised as one of the shapers of the whole intellectual tradition of the West. This study-unit will look closely at the form and content of three of Plato's best-known and most beautiful dialogues. The study-unit is directed not only to philosophy students at any level, but also to students from other disciplines, including literature, history, and cultural studies in general.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim is to introduce students to the main issues raised by Plato through a close reading of the Republic, the Symposium and the Phaedrus.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Engage critically with primary texts;
- Identify and review relevant secondary literature concerning the Republic, Symposium and Phaedrus;
- Explain the continuing interest in these texts by contemporary philosophers.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Read analytically and critically the primary texts;
- Present coherent arguments related to the topics in the primary texts;
- Write an assignment on a theme related to the primary texts.
