TITLE Directed Study 1: Reading Contemporary Social and Political Philosophy

DESCRIPTION Students will be assigned a personal academic mentor, under whose guidance they will identify two to three texts dealing with topics related to contemporary social and political philosophy. Such texts shall not be the same as those set as compulsory reading for other study-units. After a close reading of the assigned texts, students will be asked to write an extensive review of the assigned texts. Besides having tutorials with their mentors and carrying out their individual study, students will also meet to present and discuss their work at a seminar convened towards the end of the semester.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to:

- encourage guided advanced academic reading commensurate with MA level.
- provide the opportunity for writing a scholarly book review.
- offer students individual attention by a personal academic mentor.
- help students strengthen their confidence in presenting and discussing their readings and research with peers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyze and evaluate critically the content, structure, and style of the texts they read.
- interpret various books and academic papers; identify key ideas, analyze arguments, and extract relevant information from the texts they read.
- contextualize the texts they read and situate them within broader debates in contemporary philosophy and social and political thought.
- enhance their conceptual vocabulary in a manner that sustains and complements the rest of the MA programme.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- write a scholarly book review.
- hone own writing skills and styles by reading, and possibly emulating, the scholarly texts they engage with.
- communicate critical reflections to their peers.
