DESCRIPTION Drawing on the Department of Philosophy’s collaboration with international scholars and experts based at the University of Malta, this study-unit is intended as a monograph course on a cutting-edge area of inquiry that is of relevance to the philosophical reflection on social and political phenomena. An established philosopher or political/social theorist will explore with students a specialized topic at the forefront of contemporary social and political thought or interfacing disciplines (e.g. Artificial Intelligence and technology, Environmental justice, Globalization and transnationalism). The unit will typically revolve around the lecturers' own publications and/or current research projects, thus offering students the opportunity to engage with the most recent and ongoing research.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to:

- expose students to different theoretical, thematic and pedagogical approaches by an academic visitor to the Department of Philosophy;

- offer the possibility of exploring a specialized topic that relates to the rest of the MA programme but not already covered extensively in other study-units.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- explore in detail a special topic related to the broader theme of the programme;
- appraise current and ongoing scholarship in the field/s covered by the special topic;
- connect the theories, ideas and philosophers covered in the special topic with other units offered in the programme.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- acquire familiarity with the specific topic being studied, including key concepts, theories and current research;
- develop analytic and critical thinking skills that allow them to appraise different theories, arguments and approaches related to the special topic;
- conduct relevant research related to the special topic and communicate it in written form.
