DESCRIPTION - The nature and importance of communication.
- Aims and ideals in healthcare including: ethics in healthcare communication, transparency, making choices about communicating the truth, the ethics and problems of altruism, authority and power in healthcare relationships.
- Foundation knowledge and skills for effective communication.
- Working together.
- Effective written and spoken communication: Clarity, segmentation, audience, method or channel, feedback, repetition, benefits, style, tone, language and structure, visual impression, electronic mail, telephone, letters, report writing, public speaking and presentations, design.
- Complaints, apologies and public relations.
- Notes on media and managing relations.
- Barriers to effective communication.
- Research skills: proposal development, report writing and dissemination of results

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the skills required for communication with the public, other health care professionals and within a work environment. Students will learn about their own communication styles and how to adapt them to various situations.
- To present communication skills in disseminating research studies

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to adapt different communication styles depending on the level of professional interaction required.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Achieve results in their communications with others.
- Build collaborative relationships that emphasise trust and respect.
- Communicate effectively using simple, concise and direct language.
- Enhance active listening skills to anticipate and avoid common misunderstandings.
- Foster cross-cultural understanding in the workplace.
- Eliminate the barriers which hinder effective communication.
- Develop research proposal
- Adapt dissemination information from research studies according to different fora
