DESCRIPTION This study-unit elucidates the application of research methodology to the aspects of pharmaceutical research that focuses on process and service outcomes. Aspects relevant to a robust design of the research project in the areas of pharmaceutical services and in pharmaceutical technology processes are highlighted. Application of research methodology principles in the development of controlled trials, clinical trials and process analysis is presented.

Study-unit Aims:

- To present principles of research methodology in health care services and in pharmaceutical processes analysis;
- To describe study designs applicable to pharmaceutical research, as applicable to pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice;
- To explain techniques of data handling, analysis and interpretation;
- To develop research skills as applicable to research in pharmaceutical industry and patient-centred pharmaceutical services.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge and Understanding:

- Describe types of study design and approaches;
- Explain and reflect upon limitations of qualitative and quantitative research studies ;
- Describe research project planning steps;
- Appreciate approvals required for research in the field of pharmacy including ethics and date protection boards approvals;
- Describe application of biostatistics for data handling.

2. Skills:

- Conduct literature review and adopt appropriate referencing techniques;
- Critically analyse literature and study designs;
- Plan and design qualitative and quantitative studies in pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice;
- Handle and analyse data;
- Develop scholarly reports and dissemination of research results by adopting academic writing skills.
