DESCRIPTION | The unit presents principles of pharmacoeconomics and their application in decision models and drug therapy outcome measures within clinical practice in healthcare delivery systems. - Advanced economic evaluation in healthcare - Health policy management - Pricing of medicinal products and reimbursement schemes Application of pharmacoeconomic analysis in disease states (cardiovascular disease, psychiatry, respiratory disease, gastrointestinal disorders). Study-unit Aims: - To define terminology used in pharmacoeconomics and in the application of economic-based evaluation methods of pharmaceutical care services; - To describe pharmacoeconomic methodologies adopted in the economic approach of drug therapy and pharmaceutical services; - To describe impact of pharmacoeconomic evaluations on decision-making in patient care and health outcomes measurement. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define terminology used in economic-based evaluation methods; - Describe pharmacoeconomic evaluation studies; - Apply pharmacoeconomic principles to use of medicinal products and provision of pharmaceutical services. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Propose study design for economic evaluations; - Handle results of economic evaluations and examine impact of drug therapy and professional services on patients' quality of life and health outcomes; - Identify limitations of economic evaluations; - Assess impact of policy changes on economic aspects and health outcomes; - Devise decision-making models when considering access to new therapies.
