CODE PHR5626

TITLE Dissertation

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 30

DEPARTMENT Pharmacy

DESCRIPTION The unit introduces the research aspect by leading the candidate to develop a research proposal including carrying out fieldwork to establish robustness and feasibility of study design proposed. The candidate will present a report at the end of the unit.

Students will develop a literature review that evaluates literature regarding a particular area of research. This review should lead to the development of research questions and identification of an innovative study. The student should develop a methodology and present a pilot study. The final report should indicate the potential scientific contribution of the research when it is extended through credits PHR5636 indicating how the research would enhance or provide a re-interpretation of previous knowledge, describe new professional services and interventions or promote a service change.

Study-unit Aims:

- To support students to develop scientific research literacy;
- To provide students experience in formulating hypothesis, designing aims of research studies, preparing study design, fieldwork and report writing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to critical understanding of scientific research quantitative and qualitative methods.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Ability to critically evaluate and synthesise scientific literature;
- Ability to synthesise and apply scientific knowledge to develop new research hypothesis;
- Identify which quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods best apply to a set of research questions for a specific research study;
- Integrate theory, literature and methods to develop a methodology for a research study;
- Undertake preliminary pilot studies;
- Disseminate research findings and reports through scientific writing and oral communication activities.
